Fashion Studies LP Post #3: Dress Practice Log

Reflection

Through the documentation of my everyday dress, I observed one theme that emerged throughout most of my clothing choices. A lot of the time, I value comfort over style. For days I dressed in garments that didn’t fit my body well or revealed certain parts of my body, I became more aware of myself and my subject position in certain places like school or a karaoke bar. Joanne Entwistle helped me understand this in the context of the sociology of clothing, “Dress, then, forms part of our epidermis – it lies on the boundary between self and other,” (Entwistle 2002, 133). The dress log helped me understand that clothing isn’t just a way of hiding the naked body, but also as an extension of the self and that the way in which we make our dress choices is an intimate process.  For instance, living in New York and witnessing the sociopolitical climate of this city and Parsons has ultimately shifted my agency of dress.
