The Assignment
To go in-depth into the topic, Memoir, we read George Perec’s, “The Bed” and “The Bedroom” from his book Species of Spaces. By exploring each of our own personal spaces, the bed/bedroom, it helps us observe and analyze our experience of shift. We had to sketch out the earliest bed (pictured above) that we remember from our past. After sketching and discussing what makes that space sentimental to us, we had to create two 1×1 foot quilt squares that represent two different beds we have slept in.
The Process
I began by jotting down various places I remembered on a mind map. At first, I had some difficulty recalling all those different places since the map asked for specific examples. I thought what Perec said about how all I needed to do “is to close my eyes and think with a minimum of application of a given place for the bedroom to come instantly back into my memory in every detail.” With this in mind, I instantly remembered all the specific details and places I had slept in. For the quilt squares, I chose two very distinct places in mind: a hospital and my friend’s bright orange bedroom.
