Bridge 1 Critique: Jessica DAI 2/09/18

  1. DESCRIBE the piece using noticing skills. Questions you may choose to ask yourself: (Please describe a minimum of five different noticings you have.)
    What does each square represent?
Was the use of materials considering when making the art?
How long did everything take to make?

    • What are five separate elements or principles of design that you noticed in the piece you chose?
Use of lines (in all materials)
      Mixed media
      Different texture
      Organic shapes
      Found materials
    • Please describe how these elements or principles are employed in the piece.
The use of mixed media is present throughout the whole piece. Each square has a different use of  material that was deliberately chosen. She also use found items that relate to her original chosen object.
  2. ANALYZE – Choose from the open questions below or create your
own questions: (You must have five different questions – and then answer them.)

    • What relationships do you notice among the elements?

They all use string and most use embroidery. They’re all the same shape and size and they all use linear elements.

    • Practicing Bomhian Arising:
What connections do you make between the piece you experienced and anything else you are thinking about, learning about, sensing about?

The use of the material directly correlates to the meaning behind each individual piece and the set as a whole. It discusses civilization and evolution in materials. Specifically focused on string and how it’s been used for centuries for many different applications and how it’s change to adhere to modern ideas.

  3. CONTEXT: READ their Artist Statement, View their Artwork and Answer the following questions (Interpret).
  4. INTERPRET: Practicing Bomhian Arising/ Self Noticing:
    • What connections do you make
Her piece represents a the evolution of life and civilization. This directly correlates to my life as well as many others. It’s less personal and more general to the thinking of the outside world.
    • Written response should include:
      • What elements of design do you notice – and how do those portray the essence of the piece? (You will need to decide what the essence is… is it
concrete, is it representational, is it abstract, is it symbolic (of what), are you “receiving” any emotions from the piece?)

This piece definitely has a naturalistic and worldly essence. It’s also timeless as it embodies many different eras and parts of history.

      • If you could tell the artist anything about their work – what would you say? (Remember that they will be reading this and that it is public.)

It’s really well thought out and the meaning behind each individual piece was thorough. It’s clear that a lot of thought was put into it.

      • If you could recommend a website, article, book, artist, film, blog to the artist because of associations you made in your mind or through the Bohmian Arising – What would you recommend? (Remember that they will be reading this and that it is public.)
I recently watched a film in sustainable systems called sonic sea. Although not directly related to the piece, the ideas behind it kind of reminded me of the piece.
