Project 5: Character in Context

For this project I wanted to incorporate the theme of nature for the background and the doll itself. Below are the intial concept sketches for the character I wanted to create.

I wanted to keep the background simple so I could focus on the little details of the doll.

I wanted to model the doll after a waldorf doll, which is type of doll categorized by it’s wool stuffed body and their simple faces.

To make the doll I had to build the head first and sew the “skin” onto it, this was the most time consuming part. The rest was just following a pattern and putting it together.

For the dolls hair I used yarn and sewed it onto the head of the doll, then I proceeded to loosen the yarn so the hair of the doll could look fuller. I also cut out leaves from felt and stuck them onto the dolls body.

The background was very simple. I used a cardboard box as the “stage” for the doll to stand in. I used acrylics to paint the background and the simple hilly landscape.

Below are the close ups, I added leaves to the dolls hair and styled it a little. The clouds are made from felt and two of them are being hung with clear wire. The hills are made from felt with a cardboard skeleton and also fake foliage.

I wanted the doll to look like a giant in it’s environment, the small foliage is meant to act as trees.
