Week 1: 2 Aphorisms

“Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.” & “Fashion is made manifest in material forms. It demands study in the same way that ancient artefacts are made meaningful by archaeologists: through careful evaluation.” Through out the text, Fashion is said to be something that has been there forever but only noticed by a few. Fashion seems to combine of a repeated process of judgement, compliment, criticism and beyond these aspects. This extract portrays fashion in all senses and from different perspectives. It allows the reader to have a clear understanding of how fashion is achieved. It is portrayed in different ways by different people and how for some fashion defines a group, a style, a personality or even a person whereas, for others it just refers to a piece of clothing that is a necessity.

To some parts of this extract, I agree and disagree to an extent, as when it comes to me, I believe fashion changes for me. Some days, I believe the clothes I wear do not define me and they are just a part of me as it is a need but other days, it forces me to think as though it is a statement I am passing about myself to the people around me. It is almost like I am showing a side of me that is just a coverage. Overall, this extract inspires me as it allows me to keep my mind open to various ideas, aspects and theories of fashion and how it can be defined differently for each one of us.
