LP Post #3: Summary of Dress Practice

To summarise, this interview that was conducted by me. I chose to interview my roommate. This interview consisted of eight questions:

  • May I ask what kinds of clothes do you wear on a daily basis? Do you think your clothes define you as a person?
  • Do you work? If so, what kinds of clothes do you wear to work?
  • When you wake up, what does your daily routine include?
  • How have you chosen to organise your clothing items in your closet? Do you prefer to organise it into categories? If yes, then why?
  • Have you ever had an incident where you think you were overdressed or underdressed?
  • Did your clothing style change since you moved from Taiwan to Paris to New York?
  • Do you think the current trends influence your style?
  • Lately, there has been a lot of controversies in relation to genderless clothing where women and men share some clothing items that are not categorised into any genders, what do you think about this and do you wear clothes that may not necessarily be categorised as women clothing?

These questions allowed me to understand my roommate and her way of thinking. It portrayed her knowledge and her perspective about fashion and how is fashion perceived by her. I was able to relate to some practices that involved dealing with culture such as being more conservative back home but living in another country or city besides home city allowed her to be more fluid and let loose of what she wears. After a walk through her closet, I noticed that it differs a lot from mine and that is how she organises her wardrobe and each item is placed differently in her wardrobe. This interview made me realise that a lot of international student do not have their entire wardrobe to organise which has impacted each one of us differently. Lastly, in terms of dress practices, she wears different pieces of clothing for each event. For example, during her internship, she likes to wear semi-casual where as at school, she prefers wearing casual and more trendy. This interview allowed me to broaden up the aspect of trend and styles that are so called “in fashion”. They have an immense power over the current generation and letting us relate back to our culture, gender, age and more.
