My First Year students drew a pile of boxes using sighting techniques and a viewfinder. On a separate sheet of drawing paper they made a value gradation ranging from dark to light with vine and compressed charcoal. Finally they cut out the box shapes from the value gradation and applied them onto their drawing. The final composition creates a simplified value study of the way light hits the various surfaces.
