Following a lecture on Gestalt principles, students broke into groups of four. Each team used their members’ object drawings to create a series of collages. Each collage represented one of the gestalt theories including closure, continuance, proximity, similarity and figure/ground. I found that having teams of students explore the theories aided in making the concepts more accessible, particularly for those whose first language is not English. Following the exercises that teams presented the collages in a group discussion where fellow classmates had to determine which gestalt principle was illustrated.
