Hi, everyone,
Today, I would like to present three artworks that I want to discuss during the field trip that we went to last friday.
Which were Museum of Modern art, New York Public Library and Bryant Park.
From these three places, I particularly found three art pieces eye catching and these pieces overall triggered me to wonder what would the pieces have been like if they were changed in bits and parts.
First work is called the “ Letters” created by Richard Tuttle . When I first perceived this artwork, the scale and the material of this artwork astonished me. An ironical point of this artwork was that even though it should have looked heavy since it is made out of metal, it looked very light weighted. This piece was soley placed by itself in the center of a white wall which kind of reminded me a patterned wall in a little child’s room. At the same time, I felt that this piece was very quizzical in that it seemed like a word puzzle that was laid out for me and there was a solution to it but I just couldn’t get to the answer. This piece left me with unresolved conclusion and thoughts.
As I was looking at the piece, I asked myself some questions. “what if these letters were in colors instead of having no color? “what if this piece consisted of not just alphabets but all sorts of different characters from different countries?” Since MoMA is a place where lot of foreigners and travellers visit, I felt like if audiences could feel and notice their own language, it would be more interesting and attach to the piece much more easily”
Furthermore, I was curious about the purpose of the orientation of this piece. Instead of placing it horizontal, what if it were to be placed in a vertical way? Would it give a different feeling?
The second work that caught my eye was a sculpture that was placed in the sculpture garden, This sculpture is called a Broken Obelisk sculpted by Barnett Newman.
When I first saw this sculpture, the geometric shapes were risky, as in that they seemed like they were going to fall off soon. The sculpture was formed with ambiguous shapes that were balancing on each other’s peaked edges. They looked somewhat unsteady and insecure to me. The colors were rusted dark brown with a mixture of golden color which reminded me of a work by Richard Serra. Then, I questioned myself, by looking at this huge sculpture, what if there were a circle hole inside the bottom shape where people can go through? Would that engage more people into the artwork by letting them actively participate in the sculpture?
Also, what if the the way the sculpture’s position is converted? Like The top part being placed on the ground and the other part placed on the top? An What if….the top rectangular shape is skewed on the the bottom triangle shape?
The Third work, that interested me, was a work by Sam Gilliam, called 1969.
When I first saw this work, I thought the colors on this leather were very provocative. The draping of this leather was pinned on the wall and it was interesting how it is so stable with only three pins. Just by seeing the colors, It reminded me of stained laundry drooping on a hanger and vibrant pigments on a color wheel. The brown colors expecially reminded me of a stain from an onion soup where a little boy may possibly have spilled from dinner table.
Also thinking about this kid led me in to viewing this piece as a Merry-Go- Round
So I questioned myself what If this piece is used as a roof tent for merry go round and what if it is used as curtains for a n opera theatre?
Thank you for watching!
