Research Methods

+Observation
At the FIT museum Fairytale Fashion exhibition I observed the Alexander McQueen design “Rapunzel” for more than 30 minutes and wrote notes about what I perceived.

+Collecting Images
For the ethnical Garment I created a pinterest board where I collected images of the traditional Chinese Hanfu.

+Researching Information
In order to write the final paper for seminar I researched information about the exhibit Orchidelirum.

+ Collecting Artifacts
At the New York Botanical Garden I collected objects that were left behind by the visitors and others that felt from the plants.

+Imagining
In seminar we imagined a story using the objects we found which helped informed our final research paper. This story was supposed to help us find interesting things about our research location.

+Deducting
I deducted from my design ideas and research process, things that were not helpful or informed my location well enough.

+Making Connections
I made connections with the Botanical Garden and the designs I created using orchids as inspiration.

+Making assumptions
I assumed things about the Botanical garden based on what I was observing.

+Prototypes

I made prototypes of different garments in studio in order to see if my design ideas worked.

+Questioning

I questioned in my research paper that orchid hunting has a negative impact in the environment.

+Interviewing people
I interviewed many people for the photo blog posts, specifically the post style and also my peer Vonika.

+Moodboard
I created a moodboard for my final designs which helped me combined all my design ideas in a concrete concept.

+Fabric Research
I looked for the fabrics that best represented my designs and my place of inspiration.

+ Color research
Colors that best defined what I observed in the Botanical Garden were later on the main colors of my collection.

+ Styled Photos
Looked at style photos as reference in order to create my own concept to style the Botanical Garden inspired Photoshoot.

+ Presentation
Presented my work to the class. In this presentation I was able to organize my ideas in a coherent way that, flowed and made sense.

Jose Luis Cabrera is a Dominican fashion designer. His interest for fashion began during his senior year of junior high school when he first laid eyes upon the beautiful Elie Saab spring collection. The way Saab portrayed the human body was both inspiring and admirable. As time progressed, this incredible Lebanese designer became his biggest inspiration. He attended the High School of Fashion industries for four years where he graduated with honors and a Career and Technical Education diploma in fashion design. He is currently attending Parsons The New School for Design where he is able to interact and collaborate with a large, diverse, and talented group of designers from all walks of life. Cabrera has worked as an intern for SAGA Furs New York and during New York Fashion Week for designers like Oscar De La Renta and Michael Kors. In 2015 he won the Kleinfeld Bridal competition and his winning design was showcased at Kleinfeld next to the designs of famous designers such as Pnina Tornai, Lazaro, Mark Zunino and, last but not least, Elie Saab. His first collection, in collaboration with his peers, was featured in his high school’s fashion show in June of 2015. After he graduates from Parsons he plans to open his own fashion house and continue with his fashion career.

Add more every week. There are more techniques we have learned in Studio, such as mood boards, fabric research, etc.
