Good Design at MoMA, FNBK #1 + UN Prep

1) Post your first FBNK entry (scan a photo of your field notebook page and upload this image to your LP)

2) Post your completed responses to the in-class assignment for The Value of Good DesignMoMA exhibition.

3) Read the following article, “Short Answers to Hard Questions About Climate Change (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.”and write a response describing which question surprised you the most. What other, new information did you learn? Do you feel encouraged by this article? How aware do you think your friends and family are of this information?

The most surprising question is reducing beef in diet would help the climate. I didn’t know how diet would have effects on climate, but after reading this I knew that it lies in cattle production, which involves a lot of land, and burning trees. Other new information I learnt is global warming is “good” to some country, like Russia and Canada, it actually helps them to have a warmer environment for agriculture, which is better for economics reason. But this is not a sustainable way for growing economics. I feel a bit encouraged by this article, knowing that there are things we can do, eat less meat, use energy-efficient light bulbs, etc. I think my friends and family are similar to me, on the awareness of this information, we knew there’s climate change, and roughly what it causes, and there are things we can do to by changing our habits.

4) Explore articles published in the New York Times within the last month in the “Climate and Environment Section”Links to an external site.

– What was the most interesting visual that you found (photograph, diagram etc.) and why was it so powerful to you? Include the image and the link in your post.

It is powerful because the massive amount of orange across the globe is striking. Almost 99% of the ocean is covered by marine heat wave.

– Given what you learned in this article, how different do you think the planet be 50 years from now?

Damaged marine ecosystems, less coral reef, kelp forests, sea grass beds; more rainy days because of warm ocean; fishing farming affected; less biological diversity; chain effect, seabirds’ behavior / moving pattern might be changed because their food source died off or moved.

– In what ways do you think these realities will impact your work and life 50 years from now?

The frequent weather change; less fish to eat because of affected fishing farming; when scuba diving there’s  no more colorful underwater view; or most dramatic consequences would be disappeared marine ecosystems and flooding and other disasters.

– How might Long Life Designs address, acknowledge and/or work with such climate related changes over the next 50 years?

Long life designs makes our everyday objects more reusable, so that there are less needs for more production, which waste less materials for production and waste less water in the production process; some designs also encourages burning less fossil fuels and using sustainable energy source.
