Behind the Mask

Here are a collection of some comments from my social media (YT & IG). This project was in response to negative comments, but I made this collage to show that I do have appreciative & admiring followers.

To put this project into context, here are links to my social media since it was posted:

My project is called ‘Behind the Mask’. I chose this title because I was inspired my Michael Jackson’s song Behind the Mask, which discusses the power/significance of wearing a mask (literally or figuratively). Furthermore, being a self-taught makeup artist I frequently get told that I wear a mask by wearing regular beauty makeup and therefore lack confidence. That is why in almost all of my videos I show the ‘deconstruction’ of my look. I’m not afraid to go on camera without any makeup, I am secure with myself and makeup to me isn’t about hiding yourself or gaining confidence, it’s about having fun.

The text I chose img_20161003_073405-2was ‘weirdo’ a very popular comment I get that’s used to describe my artwork and me. The signified would be the concept of ‘being weird’ and the signifier would be the skin-like mask with the written. I also wanted to play around with the ideas of ‘connotation’ and ‘denotation’ and how they’re subjective and objective, respectively. For this project, I wanted to experiment to see the difference between how I used to do my art wiimg_20161012_111947-1thout labeling to now actually labeling it and see what is denoted from that. I believe there is a relationship between text and image, but what happens when there is forced text attached to the image? Instead of just an image and allowing viewers to ‘label’ it? Now what response will I get with this piece that’s labeled with the comment I usually get?

Side notes: Originally the video was going to be a vlog but it ended up being too long. Also, I am used to ‘putting on a performance’ img_20161003_073420-2or acting because I do it for YouTube; my channel is for entertainment purposes as well as to learn some things here and there. I think I should’ve also pointed out that people in my neighborhood are used to me going out with some crazy makeup to take pictures/film (hence why in the video I said that they were looking at me holding all this equipment). In the end, this video was a statement piece.
