Derive part 2

Brain made out of clay, chair made out of wood and wires, leaves collected from the Tuileries Garden./ 3D representation of my brain surrounded by the elements that grabbed my attention during the derive.

Projection of my thoughts.

  • Decisions made from derive 1 to derive 2:

For my first project, I was told during the critique that my 2D was too complex and that it lacked of clarity. The message understood by the viewers was not following my intentions. Therefore, I took the decision of simplifying my artwork by taking off some elements (eg: statues, trees, bushes,…). I only conserved the ones that were for me the most relevant towards the understanding of the message I wanted to transmit (leaves, manhole, chair, pigeon). I also decided to change the media; instead of conserving the 2D representation of my derive, I took the decision of representing it with a 3D model and a movie.

  • How I managed to improve on it:

The purpose of this project is to make the others experience my derive. At the very beginning of the making of this project, I wasn’t fully aware of that. As a result, my first project wasn’t very clear. Therefore, I decided to use the 3D and movie media in a way of offering to the viewers a full experience of what my derive was about. On the whole, I used these medias with the purpose of clearly illustrating my senses during my experience but also the narration of my derive.

The purpose of surrounding the brain made out of clay with crackled leaves, a small green chair, a pigeon and a manhole, was to show to the viewers that my brain was physically present in the Tuileries garden. In addition, these elements were the ones that marked me during my derive. The purpose of specifically placing the chair with the pigeon on top of the brain, was to show that these two elements dominated my thoughts during my derive.  Similarly, the purpose of  projecting the movie behind my brain was to create a visual projection of my thoughts. By doing so, I had in mind that if the brain made out of clay wasn’t present, the viewers wouldn’t guess that the movie itself was a projection of my thoughts. In the movie, speaks my inner-voice. As you can notice, I have added to the different movie scenes the same vignette filter. My intention was to make the viewers see through my mind’s eye. Ultimately, I thought that the 3D part and the movie were very linked to each other and that they don’t necessarily need to be set apart.

PROJECT IMPROVEMENT:

After looking through my evaluation and carefully reading Kathleen’s observations, I decided to set apart the 3D part of my project from the movie and only keep the movie. Indeed, combining both was confusing for the viewers. They couldn’t guess the meaning of each of the 3D elements. As I found the movie offering a full experience of what my thoughts were about during my derive, I decided to consider it as my whole project, in a way of this time truly simplifying.
