Sometimes I teach a class about the work of David Foster Wallace. Last semester was one of those times, and last semester also saw the release of a movie about Wallace, The End of the Tour. In the film, Jesse Eisenberg plays the journalist David Lipsky, and the movie is based on a book by Lipsky called Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself.
A writer named Daniel Michael Murphy recently sent a letter to McSweeney’s Internet Tendency raising some concerns with the film. He wanted to know whether Lipsky actually brushed his teeth—as Eisenberg does in the film—while staying in Wallace’s home. Lipsky replied hilariously.
