Over two consecutive weeks (!), the writer and editor Anna Holmes came to speak with my Tutorial Advising class, very much about what’s practical and useful in deciding to make a go at the writing life. In addition to her generosity—interrupted by the end of our first hour, she said, “I can come back next week,” and then she did—Holmes brought to the class the experience and wisdom she’d gleaned as the founder of Jezebel and from her years writing online and for magazines. We read and discussed two of her pieces, a review of Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things and an exciting essay about throwing shade. We talked about Twitter fights and compromise, Zadie Smith and “Dear Sugar.”
Our classroom meetings are now over for the semester, which strikes me as a real shame. I’ll invite everyone from the class to post her final reflection here, in the comments.
