Rollo Romig’s “Confession of a Ramadan Rookie,” which we read this week in class, has been an important essay for me over the years, including while I was writing about Honest Chops, a halal meat shop in the East Village. It revealed to me something new about Islam and about faith more broadly. Some of these lessons I incorporated into my essay “Fast Food,” published in the magazine Lucky Peach.
