Throughout this process I wanted to study adulthood, as I am living through this major transition in life towards independence as a college student. I chose New York’s many laundromats as the environment, I took photos of strangers doing a normal chore, with a film camera, I wanted my photos to be a product and not just a step in the process, I have never worked with photography as a medium, so I challenged myself to create a piece with raw film images. I noticed that New York’s lifestyle is a constant motion, in a laundromat, a person doesn’t have the power to speed up the machines’ process, a task so ordinary done everywhere around the world was the most diverse understanding of an independent life. I created a photo book, carefully placed my photos to tell a story, the captions were heavily inspired by 1950s laundry advertisements, to represent the past and the future’s idea of adulthood. Within my photos, I noticed that the hues of green and red were present, so I manipulated the images in photo shop to intensify the colors, adjust the brightness and contrast to establish a gloomy mood and create a recognized connotation to laundromats. I explored many ways to form the book, I wanted a seamless piece, I created a layout on indesign to print on a plotter, cut and folded the seams and created a flip book. My photo book successfully communicated many ideas in a concrete narrative, a photo book.
