Appropriation: the 80’s

Andy Warhol

Keith Haring

Jean Micheal Basquiat

To create this piece, I took works by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean Michael Basquiat, all prominent artists of the 1980s. I began with the photographs of Nico, Velvet Underground’s lead singer and icon of the 80’s, by Andy Warhol. I laid the photographs on a Basquiat, pulled aspects from Keith Haring’s work to capture the idea of a photograph’s ability to capture a movement in time. With a combination of New Expressionism and Pop Art, I appropriated a final piece that embodies the importance of collaboration and the progressive ideas that can sprout from people of different talents and backgrounds to establish a community of creativity and acceptance. Today, pop culture and our current tense and unjust political environment have negatively influenced the public and the younger generation, although has increased awareness and the need to push for change. The grouping of four different artists of the 80s depict an idea of harmony. Keith Haring impacted the commercial and advertising aspect of pop culture. Andy Warhol took pride in his frivolous and exciting lifestyle, pulled inspiration from his environment and the relationships he formed with creative revolutionaries, which is seen in the numerous photographs of Nico. Andy Warhol’s flower prints are a direct example of appropriation, he manipulated and cropped an image by Patricia Claufield, the piece shows the beauty of a flower and the artificial style amplifies the short lasted beauty of a flower before it dies.
