- DESCRIBE the piece using noticing skills. Questions you may choose to ask yourself: (Please describe a minimum of five different noticings you have.)
- What are five separate elements or principles of design that you noticed in the piece you chose?
- texture through the use of letters and handwritten text
- monochromatic, black on vellum (?) paper, layered papers
- abstract in shape, there is no limitations of a rectangular piece of paper
- rough and torn edges mixed with smooth cut edges
- chaotic and illegible lettering which symbolizes a jumble of thoughts
- ANALYZE – Choose from the open questions below or create your
own questions: (You must have five different questions – and then answer them.)- What relationships do you notice among the elements?
- The piece is dense in texture through black and white letters, I am currently taking a typography class and I have learned that type can create texture and black and white can create color and layers, Isabelle has literally taken the English language and layered pieces of it to create this dense piece that depicts rocks. Without physical texture in the materials, she was able to create rough and scratchy through her writing.
- Why black and white?
- This probably goes back to the basics of writing and how she uses this basic skill to communicate her ideas and plan.
- How does the choice in materials impact the piece?
- With using smooth paper, she forces the letters and the writing to create the dense and rich chaos that illustrates the roughness of a rock and the literal use of paper reflects her object choice.
- Why would she position the pieces of paper in a chaotic layout?
- I think the composition was thought out, it portrays an intended cleanliness but is also a representation of her brain and the thoughts that are constantly stimulated, journaling is her outlet for organization and peace of mind.
- How does the subtle coffee stain impact the personality of the piece?
- I think the coffee stains remind the audience that there is a person who operates on a system, it definitely interprets this idea of a person who is on the go and needs stimulation.

- What connections do you make
- to your life;
- the world;
- I personally can connect to the importance of owning a journal, notebook and a planner. I would like to think that I am spontaneous, but I live in a place that is constantly stimulating my brain, so to have a platform for me to organize my thoughts have transformed my time management skills. I found there was a strong connection between the process of her creating these pieces and the actual tasks she writes down on a daily basis. Through observing and analyzing this one specific object she was able to realize the impact her journal can have on her mental health, acting as a stress relieve and a place for new and exciting ideas.
