Diderot Encyclopedie

The Met’s Watson library is home to the first editions of Diderot Encyclopedie, etched bound books dedicated to the world’s knowledge, made in the 1700s. Each student was seated at a book opened for exploration, different volumes consisted of pictures of nature, mechanics, fabrics, weavings, anthropology and more. I found the section of fibers and fabrics intriguing, my first word choice is “knot”, I found the process of weaving and fabric making interesting. I unintentionally took photographs of hands, I feel that expanding on the verbs that hands produce could be interesting to explore. I have a personal interest in chair design, so the etched images of chairs interested me, I could potentially explore situations where a chair was used in literature pieces or art.
