“The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers”

Choose one of twelve questions and expand.

Who are you and whom do you love?

Your personal identity is shaped by the people that you surround yourself with, your family impacts your outlook on life, the people that you choose to love live a life that you somewhat agree with. Although you cannot choose your family, your upbringing shapes your present state of being.

I am Amaya Kque Avila and I love my mother, my sister, my father, my cousin Cesaly, my best friends Isabella Morris and Maya Moretta. I am a student reading in New York City at Parsons School of Design.

My mother and I are very different, we value things differently as I am learning in a metropolitan hub she is gardening in a lush land, but in many ways we are alike. I grew up with a single mother and our challenging life has brought us together in many ways, but as I matured I realized that there was much more to life, more for me to discover.

My father and I are very similar, we value things similarly. Throughout the last three years of my life he has heavily impacted and supported me on my journey to Parsons.

My cousin Cesaly, my first best friend in life, my constant listener. I love her and one thing I find throughout all members of my family is that there are many differences between them and I, but those similarities are things that I grasp tightly, because it is what unites us. Only three months apart, living life with her I don’t have to try, I truly just get to be Amaya. From the outside looking in, people are not able to believe our bond and throughout my many drastic shifts in locations, she is always there.

My best friend Isabella Morris, a walking ray of sunshine wears floral dresses, pale blush tones, 1960s folk music, we could not be anymore opposite. When I am with her she brings out this carefree, sweet person. Our beginnings as friends is my favorite story to tell. Costume design. Junior year. It was a friendship that was founded on creation, expression and collaboration.

My best friend Maya Moretta, a dynamic voice, vibrant hues, bold statements.
