Femme Power

For this studio project I tried my hand at making digital art. I typically prefer working with my hands more, but digital art is a very popular and up and coming form of art and I think it’s important to make sure that I’m getting experience making pieces this way. In my drawing class, I used Photoshop to aid me in studying value and learned some tricks that helped me with this project.

Since the character that I made up, Danielle Davoe, is a high power magazine company CEO I thought it would be fitting to make a mock magazine cover on Photoshop complete with a title and objects that my alter ego would realistically use in her everyday life.

This was my first draft of the magazine cover, featuring black coffee and red lipstick.

After bringing this in for the first round of critiques, my classmates and teacher suggested either turning this into a full magazine or making it into a series of still lifes to present instead of just one magazine cover.

I took the advice of my class and worked instead on four still life pieces to capture the essence of my alter ego. I chose four symbols to draw on Photoshop: red lipstick, black coffee, a work phone and a personal phone, and the title of a magazine.

For a complete Photoshop beginner, I think these turned out well. If I were to change certain aspects of this project I would think about presentation, especially the type of paper I printed these on and the layout/order that I hung them up in.
