Final Bridge Moment

Introduction to research

Students have studied researching in both Seminar and Studio class. It recalled by terrible memory about writing a real research paper back in my high school years so it scared me a bit at first. However, when the professors actually instructed that in classes, my worries were resolved since it was a less complicated version of researching compared to what I once did. In Studio, we experienced the way of working while being site specific. We had to make a site specific project after choosing an adequate location that we will further research. In Seminar, we picked a site and wrote a research paper about it. I had hard time in Studio class stuck in the step of developing an idea because I did not understand the given instructions fully. On the other had, the process of writing a research paper in Seminar class was very creative and musing. I like the part that we do not have to only paraphrase already known facts bout the site. Developing students’ own ideas about the site was very amusing. I selected Korea Way located in Korea town and Macy’s department store building located at Herald Square for Studio and Seminar class. Then I created the door welcoming cultural diversity represented as the passengers of different cultural backgrounds passing through it and the research paper about the physical utility of the department store. The reason why I wanted to write the research paper a about the building was because of a designer Alexander Wang’s idea that a designer must be aware of retail process. Ever since I knew the idea, it was my wish to be engaged with a study of retail environment. Researching about Macy’s department store building that proposes many problems related with its profit earning provided me a great chance to do so. Learning how to be site specific led me to the right way of how to create a site specific work. It was meaningful to learn in First Year classes.

Nice reflection, Kit! I admire your willingness to work with two different locations based on your developing interests. Good work. Best wishes for future classes!
