The Armor (Tatami Gusoku)
Lacquaered iron, mail, silk, gilt copper
Edo period 17-18th century
The suit literally translates to “folding.” Tatami means folding. The reason why it’s named that is because it could be contained into a small box and easily transported by one person, unlike the European armour. Usually, it was made for lower ranking officials but this one, in particular, was probably used by a samurai. This is because it is made out of gold and silk.
I liked this piece in particular because it was more compact than the others, I didn’t really enjoy how the other armours were so elaborate that it didn’t look functional.
The structure of this is made of square sheets of metal, I want to use labels to replicate that. I want to make a coat that is made with labels as it’s textile, and it will also be invertible. So that on one side it looks like a normal jacket but when inside out it is made with labels and all recycled materals.

Choose a piece and write a paragraph describing:
1. The material used is photographs, fiber, and clay of a sort.
2. The techniques used are modeling, weaving, and casting.
3. The concept or ideas behind the piece is about the solar system. This is why the sculpture has a circle motif. The head even spins a full 360 degrees.
4. I liked this piece because for an odd reason I thought that it looked like a sound piece. I was half expecting music to play with the head with the wheel spinning.

The piece I chose is called Woman in the Garden. It is made out of Welded and painted iron. The Piece is made by welding and soldering iron then painted with white paint. The metal parts were cut in geometric and organic shapes to create a balanced piece that is both futuristic and human feeling. I chose the piece because this was the one that caught my eye the most in gallery four. Originally I wanted to do the modeled bronze face without a nose because it reminded me of King Tut’s mask. But I didn’t because it went against the figurative piece guild lines. I like this piece because it makes has movement in it, it feels like I’m watching the woman is dancing in the garden.
