FINAL PROJECT 4

I wanted to make a piece about the flow of time during the creative process. In order to achieve this I started the design process like another time I would make something. I designed a dress, a simple but elegant dress with a fitted bodice and a handkerchief hem circle skirt. The dress is made of lace so that the view can see into the layers of the dress. The dress is a floral pattern because I wanted it to be organic, since the creative process is organic for me. In the process of designing, I collected elements that were created during the process. For example, my initial sketches, to the flats, to the muslin pattern/mock ups.

When I was done making the dress I had a pile of elements that were made during the process of making the dress. At this point I started building the project. In the process of making a dress there is a mock-up that is created, which is a test run of what the dress is suppose to look like. So that the designer can see how it fits on the body without having to waste fabric that’s 60 dollars per yard. On top of the mock up I started attaching elements from the process.

The individual pieces are a representation of the creative process. So in the terms of semiotics, they are indexes. This is because the individual pieces represent how much time and energy and design process it took me to make the dress.

Ultimately the dress is about the journey that is of making a dress. Of course I had troubles, I’ve never worked with lace before and I was unable to get a zipper foot to install zipper the “proper” way, the machines I worked with were inconsistent and some were not ideal for lace. But that was all part of the process, that was all part of the journey. That was a part of the time flow during the creative process.

Pattern making

So the first draft of the pattern was made from my roommate as the maniquin, the work room was closed by the time I was able to start working.

I was able to fit the pattern to Jasmine and it worked out fairly well.

I don’t have a pin cushion, so I had to make do.

Flats

these are the flat designs of the dress. It’s what it’ll look like when draped on the figure, for the most part.

It might look like this with out he darts if I decide to make the skirt a circle skirt

Sketches #1

Above is the first layer. It will be made up of sketches and iterations of the pattern. It’ll be asymmetrical and ragged and diy looking.

The second layer is made up of muslin. It’ll also have layers of the patterns w mistakes.

The third and final layer is the “final product” It’s made up of a transparent fabric, maybe chiffon or silk of a sort

This is what the dress will like with all the layers put on top of each other. But of course it’ll vary depending on how the layers get done.

Brief for project 4

The project I want to do is based on the concept of the time flow of the creative process. The time flow would be represented in a 3D garment. The garment will be constructed of the process, process will be the garment. This means that the garment is constructed of illustrations and the pattern made in the process of creating a full garment. I want the layers of creation to be seen so it will be like a three tiered garment where from the bottom the view will be the initial process and as the eye travels up the garment will be more “finished.” The garment is essentially made of 2D and digital elements pertaining to the concept.

I would use a combination of illustrator, 2D, and 3D work. I would create sketches and notes on 2D while researching the project, illustrator to create the final sketch and the patterns for the dress, and 3D work to make the garment itself. The materials I will need will be: paper, a mannequin, sewing machine/thread, adobe/laptop, and fabric.

The concepts used would be a combination of Deleuze and design theory. Deleuze Because it’s process it can be seen as secondness because we’re consciously experiencing the process of creation. Design theory because I’m going to have to consciously decide on which theories to use and which to not to use in order to make a successful piece.

I was debating if I wanted to sue the book together, like a traditional art book. But I decided against it because that didn’t seem effective for the concept.
