IDS 2: By the People: Designing a Better America

After viewing By the People: Designing a Better America exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt, there was one piece that particularly caught my attention. In comparison to the other projects displayed at the exhibition, this one was very small in scale — in which somehow I felt and appreciated the gesture of these designers even more. Cooperating into ‘designing a better America’ doesn’t necessarily require a mound of money to invest and rebuild centers and roads, it starts from the mindset. These designers turned a simple abandoned house into a center of entertainment for young kids and members of communities to gather about and appreciate the arts.

Sketch Response:

In this drawing, I want to portray the dullness of the abandoned house versus the colorful and fun community it has been transformed into after the project. I colored the house over faintly with black, brown and blue to show how off-putting it could appear to the community due to its abandonment. The colorful child-like drawing on top of the house is drawn to represent the fun and happiness of the community after its transformation. I wanted to capture a child’s creativity to show the pureness and joy.
