Intro to Fashion Studies: Dress Practice Log Reflection

These images are of my clothes and shoes. The limited space given at dorms makes it difficult for me to see ‘everything’ when getting ready. I realised that I tend to wear certain pieces of clothing more regularly because those are the ones I actively think about and more aware of.

The theme that I noticed that kept emerging while writing my dress practice log, is the social factor influence on my choices of dress. Constantly throughout the week, I mentioned that I am meeting up with a particular person — which would be the source of motivation to why I’m dressing up. Those people include my sister, and my friends. Another social factor that influenced my dress practices were the places I was going to. Even though those places don’t have specific dress codes on what I can’t wear, there are somewhat silent implications and understandings on what should be worn.

The things I noticed throughout the process that I hadn’t before is that I dress up more than I initially thought. On weekdays, I always considered myself to dress very casually, unless something comes up and requires me to look somewhat presentable. While logging my dress practices, I realised that there are constantly occasions for me to dress up for that it becomes almost a frequent fashion — that I have more dress up days that casual days.

The dress practice log impacted my understanding of the relationship between clothing and body by enforcing the importance that one has on the other. Everyone uses clothes to modify themselves, but I never realised I use it to its advantage this much. This assignment has made me realised that I subconsciously dress modify my style according to the people I plan on seeing. I don’t usually think about how much clothes affects our impressions on others, and vice versa.
