Myth Assignment Reflection – Seminar – Nathaniel Leshem

I really enjoyed this project because I felt it delved deeper than the rest we have done this year. We were not only asked to see a character’s perspective from another point of view but also asked to interject parts of our own perspective into the text as well as the visual response. From the start this got me thinking in creative and new ways. For this assignment I really wanted to take the opportunity to put myself in the shoes of the protagonist from my story. By walking over eighty blocks I felt I was able to immerse myself into the myth and ultimately write a better story while also visually documenting it. I also think that the research part of the project was a good addition because it helped me explore different aspects of my story more deeply, and see other people’s points of view on what I was trying to reinterpret. I found it very interesting that Jodie commented on how my video looks a lot like my drawings. I had never considered this before but I realized that what she said was definitely true, and it gave me a deep sense of satisfaction to know that I was exploring my voice in other ways. The fact that this project another version of what I like to do most says a lot about its effectiveness. I also thought it got the class as a whole went much deeper than usual.  I think overall this project challenged me physically and mentally and required me to think deeply and from multiple perspectives.

Success

To me, success is the ability to do exactly what I want professionally and create a life for myself where I have the freedom to do what I want. Unfortunately, I am a somewhat materialistic person, so I would also like to be able to make a lot of money. On the other hand, I believe that the ultimate form of success comes from the ability to be authentic to yourself, and the ability to be resilient and positive in the moment. During the difficult moments in life, many people resort to the easiest mindset which is to feel bad for yourself. To me, success comes from the ability to be positive during the roughest times and not panic. I believe that this is one of the hardest things to do but one of the most important.

Another form of success I strive for is the ability to be confident. There’s no way to achieve monetary success or true authenticity within work without the ability to know for a fact that you have something to offer. I am naturally a somewhat lazy person, so in order to be a successful I recognize that I will need to figure out a system where I can set myself up for productivity. This includes working on my organizational skills and creating a routine that makes working easier. I also realize that when working on something I like to do, I am able to have a ferocious work ethic. This means I need to seek out the parts of life that inspire me, and incorporate them into the parts of life that are harder for me.

To me, another form of success is the ability to have healthy relationships with those close to me. Within my personal relationships, I strive to think about those who support me and provide an equal amount of support in return. I also believe that success is treating people kindly, and being respectful is key to success and a healthy life overall. Another part of my definition of success is understanding my role within society as well as the simple fact that nobody is above anyone else, at the end of the day, we are all humans.Success is also maintaining a healthy mind. It is important to be self reflective and to understand how your mind operates. Once you are able to do this, you can turn your weaknesses into strengths and thus become a more versatile and well rounded individual.
