MoMA shows the works of many modern artists. Their themes and performance media are different. However, you can easily find that many artists directly or indirectly reflect one element: humanity. (Of course, there are still many abstract arts.) These elements may be human society, and may be the product of human beings, perhaps human beings themselves. This is a very interesting but understandable phenomenon. After all, we are complex creatures.
Among these works of art, what I don’t like the most, and perhaps the least favorite of others, is Bruce Nauman’s Dirty Story A/B. The artist used two small televisions, a bit like the director’s monitor. The two televisions are linked together, one on top of the other, one on the front and one on the back, one of which is inverted. There are two different videos alternately on the TV. One is a clown laughing in the middle of the screen. The laughter is loud and scary. You can even hear this laugh outside the showroom. The other is that the video is normal, and only the green yellow characters and a female voice are displayed on the video screen. However, when these two sounds are combined together, one is crazy and one is normal, it gives people a kind of irritability.
Why do we fear this video or environment? First, an essential feature of a clown is that its appearance is similar to that of human beings. However, there is a subtle difference between exaggerated clothing and makeup. Then humans have a strong sense of disgust for extremely anthropomorphic but non-human objects. For example, killing dolls, robots, etc., which are often seen in B-series movies. Then the laughter in the video. Laughter is a feature of every clown. The clown’s makeup with a smile is in stark contrast to the hidden danger of death. This intense contradiction can cause a strong sense of anxiety and stress. The point I want to point out is not the clown element but the human being.
I want to create a fear sense through this human-related form variant . The medium for this work is plaster . It shows the layers of skin peeled off from the body. The work hadn’t been painted to make it more realistic. I think , in pure white, this work is more elegant. I attached a photoshopped image to show how it looks like when it was painted.
