Submission and Reflection on the Muslin

My theme is based on women’s business suit, so I decided to do a formal knee-length skirt. I added some bindings as decorations too create some fashionable sense and I hand-sewed to the sides. I tried lots of combinations of the arrangement of the bindings and came up with this style. Overlapping and cross over. I patterned a black straight tight skirt I have because it is simple and it has the length and straight version I wanted. (instead of a “A” line style) This relates to my research topic is because it is a professional business look. The message behind this piece is that women’s business suit delivers confidence and power, but it can also be fashionable with the sense of professionalism. Therefore, this piece is a combination of professionalism with a fashion style.

process:

  • The new techniques I learned was to have a clean edge, to double fold it to make it clear and the darts on the skirt is a useful skill I learned for this piece because dress looks better with darts. It is more structure and professional. Sewing for the stripes (bindings) went smoothly because it is a straight line and it is pretty easy to control after ironing.  but the finishing for the waist part was challenging because I don’t know that  I need to double layer the dress at the first and adding a waist band is weird for a formal business skirt. As well, it was challenging to attach the binding to the skirt since I have to hand-sew it. It makes the piece less-professional. I have to learn how to double layer to piece when cutting the pattern paper before final project because business suit has to be formal and has a clean edge on the inside.
