Time: Final Project – Movie – Ethnic Neighborhoods in Manhattan

In this project, I made a movie of the ethnic neighborhoods in Manhattan. I shot all those video clips in the morning to the night in 4 different locations: Japanese Street, China Town, Little Italy, and Korean Town. I used different filters on each location, and I use different ways of transition from one location to another.

The Project Reflection

My name is Yu Tong Tiffany Ling, and I come from Hong Kong. My major is communication design, and this is the first year for me to be in Parsons.

In order to make this project, I learned different ways of making model, such as 3d printing, laser cut, and so on. I also learned how to use wire to make an electric circuit to achieve my goal. This is one of the challenges I met that it was so hard for me to not let the circuit to be a short circuit.

On the other hand, I also put some design on this project. At first, I did not plan to put any decorations on my project, but I did at the end, in order to made my project look less empty. Michelle gave me lots of advises on decorating the model, which were helpful to my project.

1. How could we intertwine wind and solid structures as a way to emit a ‘natural sound’?
2. The rushing of the subway upon arrival and departure creates a gush of wind when entering the subway station. How could we combine an instrument of noise with the relatively strong winds that are exposed when the train is near.
3. How can the peculiar architectural designs around and possibly within the station be used to hang or securely place objects of interest.
4. How does the echo play a part within the space we decide to implement our instrument. Is it a loud echo or not?
5. Is it possible to implement lighting in a way that creates a different experience for whomever crosses through or passes by our object of creation. Light and sound? Solar panels to power an electrified instrument.
6. How can we use create something light enough to be hung ?
7. What materials should we use so its light enough to transport to this station?
8. When interviewing subway users should we ask them what materials, sounds, or colors they would like to see or hear?
9. Should our piece be interactive with subway users or just something to look at?
10. Should our design contradict or blend in with the environment of the subway station?
11. Is there any purpose for choosing the location for recording sounds?
12. How could we create different sound with our architectural to fit in different meanings?
13. How can we link the sound and the architecture together?
14. What is our purpose of measuring sounds on subway station?
15. Should we keep the original sound track, or edit it?
