Artist/Project Statement

Artist Statement

Ever since I was little, I always had a fascination of tattoos. My parents always taught me that tattoos were a taboo and people who got them were criminals or in a gang. I was always nagged that tattoos were unprofessional and ugly, and if I got one, I would be disowned. In my second semester, I wanted my finals to prove how tattoos are nothing more than getting your teeth clean. With post-millennials redefining the hip-hop culture, tattoos were able to make a comeback as an artform such as music or dancing. Even though the idea of getting tattoos have changed through millennials, women in the industry aren’t represented as respectable artist such as males. Through seminar, I am researching about how women artist are changing the industries by pushing designs that help people identify more with themselves and the environment when getting tattooed, while in studio, I am creating different designs to prove that some tattoos aren’t oriented for any gender, race, or sexuality.
