FINAL PROJECT “GENDER: RED”

GENDER: RED

My Concept

Throughout the year, my theme was based on the concept of Androgynous fashion. I targeted myself to create something that’s flexible in gender and ready to wear. The whole idea is to create a womenswear with little bit of a masculine taste; So I decided to create this jacket as my final garment. As our society changes in a way of becoming more open-minded and acceptable for all genders, the idea of androgynous fashion and gender fluidity have became a hot topic. Since this concept came from the group of LGBT people, it made the color of BLACK became a trend that everybody will use when they design unisex cloth. In my perspective, black is no longer the only color that we considered as unisex color; The color of red can also be part of it. Red also represents the passion that I have when I design the cloth, and how passionate people are when they talked about their gender rights. However, I designed the garment with only some pieces of red in it, to emphasize the idea of how gender equality is still not consider acceptable in many other countries. This is why I symbolized red in a perspective of genders that can’t be define; thus, created the piece of GENDER: RED.

Progress

The process of making a jacket is painful. First, I’m new to sewing machine and it’s definitely hard to patterned a jacket out from a coat. There are several different pieces of a jacket, from sleeves to collar. I sewed 5 sleeves in total because the size is hard to fit with the body. It was all made out from dark navy thick cotton, and some red cotton fabrics. I designed the jacket with a rectangle cut in the front to make it fit my aesthetic. However, at the every last minute, I changed my idea of making one of the front piece into red, so the jacket doesn’t look less interest.

FINAL GARMENT

I took the picture in several different places and it also results different feelings. I want to show my audiences that the jacket is not just a simple jacket but contains different kinds of styles in it. For example, the jacket can be very business style that gives you the feeling of empower women; it can be very casual as a daily wear when you walk down the street. Also, it can be very vintage and masculine and consider it as a suit.

Connection

My seminar paper was based on the idea of androgynous fashion and how has it influenced traditional fashion. Throughout the research, I figured out gender equality is still a big issue today. That’s how I’m certain about what kind of cloth that I want to design and what kind of audience that I’m target on. Besides, I accidentally found some interesting things, such as baby pink was supposed to be little boy’s color, and baby blue was supposed to be little girl’s color. That’s how I came up with the idea of making RED the NEW BLACK, everything is possible!!!!! The creative director of Gucci Alessandro Michele used to say:“It’s not just about blurring genders, it’s when things are not exactly what you think. Who wants rules now? Nobody! Especially not women.” This made me realized that my jacket is not just about my design, is about the message that I wanted to pass on. It’s about how different gender has its own value in the society and how important it is to be able to accept others.

What’s More?

I’m a BBA major student, so technically I don’t really need to learn anything about sewing. However, I’m passionate about design! After this project, I found myself really interested in fashion design. It’s not just a process of making cloth but a process of following your heart to do what you want. I know that I’m not going to be sewing for the next three years, but I would like to keep this as my hobby and create more designs for myself ! ❤️

Welcome to my world.
