Submission and Reflection Theme Map

My theme map is about Neutral, which my map is based on a Venn diagram of both menswear and womenswear. I developed the sub-themes: Androgyny, Suit&Tie, Silk&Lace, High heels, Oversize, Masculine and Feminism. These sub-themes helped with defining my main concept of Neutral. When I was making the theme map, I figured out that there’s a lot of different ideas in fashion that both menswear and womenswear share together. As I searched up the information about neutral fashion, I found things that surprised me a lot. For example, there’s a lot of shows in the recent years that use female element in menswear runway; such as Vetements. Besides, they also created a lot of strange designs that can fit both on women and men, like oversize hoodies and shirt with pussy-bow. We started to mix different types of elements into one.

I was really interested in the word androgyny. First of all, I have never heard of that word before and this concept of androgynous fashion is what can be considered as a hot topic now. It is fun to see how the idea of gender fluidity can be passed on by fashion.

My research question for seminar is: How has the idea of androgyny fashion changes the way traditional fashion works?

I felt like the concept of androgynous fashion is changing the way traditional fashion works, which is like having two completely non-related runways to show different ideas. However, as the nearest fashion week in New York have made a lot of changes in form, such as combing two shows into one and having designs that’s call for political statements. Thus, I would like to know more about how the idea of gender fluidity fashion has influenced the new fashion form.

Welcome to my world.
