Fashion Seminar: Bridge #2

Illustration & Surface design

My Fashion illustration collection is named BISENSE. It is a play with words, Bi means double, and Sense is a general feeling of what womenswear and menswear should be. My theme of the collection is based on the idea of androgyny and gender fluidity, and I want to show my audience directly by the name BISENSE, to give the idea of mixing two types of fashion together. All of my pieces are based on menswear on female models, such as hoodies, suits and jackets. However, I redesigned them in a more feminine way by using handmade lines patterns, accessories, high-heels, bows and makeups to show the combination of menswear and womenswear.

As the idea of androgynous fashion became more and more popular, our society started to focus on the group of people of LGBT. Ruby Rose, an Australian model, DJ, came out as a lesbian at the age of 12, she suffered physical abuse and verbal taunts from her schoolmates. Her words “The takeaway is that only you know who you were born to be and you need to be free to be that person” really inspired me, which she mentioned the idea of be who you want to be, made me understand the importance of freedom. It’s an open world with open minds, fashion itself is no longer created for necessities, as designers, we need to look beyond of what fashion could do to help people. In my collection, women can wear how they want to wear just like men, so I think the quote perfectly reflects my idea on gender equality and bisexual design in the fashion industry.

Welcome to my world.
