History of Fashion “Topic Choices”

History of Fashion “Topic Choices”

I found couples of interesting images from my own book “Fashion 150” and researched about then online, here is my three options:

  1. This is the fashion photography thats by Goon Mili in the year of 1951, couture was designed by Cristobal Balenciaga. He was inspired by the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec.This is a very fashion forward photo from the 1950s, with ladies smoking in from the camera and the color of black and fuchsia recall the tradition costumes of Balenciaga’s Spain. Which is very passionate and identical. He made a lot of garments that’s inspired by his culture theme, such as religious themed paintings, sculptures, toreadors and flamenco dancers. We can tell from the photo that the waistline had been removed for these evening dresses, to created more volume to the garment. The photo gave me the kind of feeling of sexy but elegance at the same time. You can be very attractive but also high-class. His idea of making changes for all kinds of fashion really interested me, he always created those master piece and giving a sense of his culture background. Since my field is marketing and branding, this kind of fashion photography will be immediately catch people’s eyeball. It’s also very brilliant to pose in a sort of S-curve to fit the actual design of the dress.
  2. This is a fashion photography by Nat Farbman in the year of 1952, deigned by Hubert de Givenchy and modeled by Bettina Graziani a French model who was the early muse to Hubert de Givenchy in the 1940s-50s. Bettina Graziani was wearing this very classic ruffle-sleeved white blouse with black embroidery, and this blouse was named after her Called the ‘Bettina’ blouse. This wide collar and wide open neck shows the young fresh style offered by Givenchy house back in the 50s. Bettina’s pose is very strong and shy at the same time especially with the whole body presenting a inverted triangle. It is a very vintage style photo with black and white, also her face give you the kind of feeling of confidence and aristocratic. You definitely can see the story behind the photo, we can tell that she is the muse of Hubert de Givenchy by how this blouse fit her so much and her eyes. Seems like he is giving all the best to her. Besides, high-waist pencil skirt  fits perfectly to her body, another S-curve was out on the magazine. I read couple of things about the blouse and the model. I felt that there is more in this woman that inspired the designer and it’s about creating story for the line and brand. I think Hubert de Givenchy really did a great job on setting up the background.
  3. This is the advertisement that shown by the cover of the English edition of the Louis Vuitton catalogue in 1901. However, I can’t find the photographer.
The photo shows specifically how Louis Vuitton, founded in 1851, started to produce letter bags that are small enough to be carried in woman’s hand, that’s how the idea of hand-bag came from. Also we can tell from her outfit with the hat that people at 1900s wear hat to define their status. I found this very compelling because it’s hard to relate those “suitcase” /bags with women at the beginning of 90s. This is a very elegance cover with the curly typography of sign of Louis Vuitton. I personally love to travel, but I was wondering how people travel with those huge cases without wheels. Thus, it is also very interesting to look at the idea of travel with the sense of luxury. Of course, designs of everything is suppose to make people’s life easier, even though I’m not a fashion major student, but I would love to tell my customers why should they buy our product instead of others, and this ads definitely show me a story behind it, and as a consumer, I would like to buy their product in a sense of being in the upper class or travel better.

Welcome to my world.
