Sandy and I had to create a sketchbook that would be representative of both of us.
For this, I asked her many questions about herself so that I would have an idea of her personality, style, hobbies. Those questions helped me making those pages in a way that they would correspond to her.
Every page correspond to Sandy’s Characteristics, personality and have been thought, created in a way that would fit her universe, style.
This the Cover of the sketchbook. It has been made out of a Takashi Murakami painting. I thought it would fit perfectly to Sandy’s Universe: a love for cartoons, colors.
This cover represents Sandy in two ways.
First, Sandy is a really motivated person when it comes to succeed, she has enough anger in herself to allow her to do, to reach her goals.
I think that motivation and anger are things you can read, see in someone’s glance.
This the first reason why I only stuck eyes on the cover.
The second reason why I made this cover is because Sandy has changed schools many times. She has lived in many different places, continents, so she has a large vision of the world. That is why I only stuck eyes so that they would pop up and traduce the idea of this large vision.
When Sandy and I talked, I asked her the question of what was in her room and she answered: ” a lot of disney teddy bears” So I decided to create a “Stitch” Murakami, I got inspired by his recent exhibition at the Galerie Perrotin. this exhibition was portrait of Pharell Williams circled by all those flowers. Since Stitch is Sandy’s absolute favorite Disney Character I made instead of a Pharell portrait, a Stitch portrait.
The reason why I made this drawing is because Sandy is someone who is really agressive when it gets to achieving her dreams. She also gave me the world “sky” as a word to represent herself, since she loves freedom. She is someone who want to succeed but who also wants so have freedom in her job.
This drawing is a star which has five main lines that reach, focus on a single point in the middle.
The star would represent the sky, which would represent the freedom. The straight lines would represent her deep motivation to reach her dreams. The meaning of the drawing is Sandy’s biggest wish: Having a successful career in which she has freedom.
Then I drew and add element to the drawings in order to keep the sketchbook close to Sandy’s style but also to keep an uniformity trough the sketchbook.
Purple is Sandy’s Favourite color, but not only. Purple is much more important than that to Sandy, since when I asked her the word that she would say if she had to pick one to describe herself, she answered purple.
This page doesn’t really have an explanation, it is like a mood board in the process of understand and depicting Sandy’s Style personality.
Those are Jeff Koons work of arts. And again I think he is an artist who Sandy could refer to, in a matter of style.
What I like about Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons is that they both have a very colorful, childish and kitsch style but which is very impressive and releases maturity in a way.
Sandy describes herself as a typical Scorpio girl which is the reason why I made this drawing.
Scorpios are really independent. They are able to accomplish anything they put their mind to and they won’t give up. They are loyal, passionate and dynamic. Sandy insisted on those characteristics, so I thought it would be a straightforward and visual way of representing her .
This Big word is Sandy’s Chinese name written in Chinese and the second little one at the bottom right hand corner is freedom.
Sandy, even thought she has lived in the USA is originally from China. Those are her roots and her culture. So I found it important to remind when she came from and also because having a double culture is very different from having one. So I thought it was necessary to include this idea of this bicultural bringing-up in the Sketchbook.
Sandy gave the word crazy out of the 3 words she had to choose to describe herself. This painting is a mix of color, a mix of shapes, i felt like it gave the idea of a certain craziness, as if the painter had gone mad, put paint on a canvas just following his instinct, feelings.
Sandy feels free when she swims, sees the water. She also love the sky. So for this painting I used colors in order to represent the sunset on the water. Because both are elements she is really attached to. It bring her peace, freedom.
This was the final version of the sketchbook. After following my classmates advice, which was to bring a bit uniformity to the sketchbook, I remade it completely. Now there is a uniformity to the sketchbook in terms of colors and patterns even thought the subjects on every page are about different aspects of Sandy’s personality
