Chindogu

The first idea I had about my Chindogu was to create a glass that could have two separated drinks in the same glass without mixing them. Here is my low resolution prototype:

Then I asked myself, Why not three? So I created the “Plus Three”:

Making the garment – Jacket

1- The base of my jacket I made it out of a black plastic fabric (kind of an imitation of leather) and I joined all the separated parts with glue gun

2- Then I pasted the sleeves with a small piece of cloth so this way it haves more mobility

3- Then I aded the big shoulder pads which I made out of carton and duck tape and after doing that I covered them with the plastic fabric

4- I added red “squares” made out of plastic bags and red duck tape and details with caution tape

Explication of my garment

My inspiration came from the firefighters, since my concept was “Shelter” and they give shelter to de community, protecting them not only from the fires but also from traffic accidents, nature catatrophes and explosions, being the first responders at any emergency situations. Also, they inspired me because their uniforms are mostly red and yellow, two important colours in the Chinese culture, that I saw repeatedly in China Town. The red symbolises good fortune and joy, and the yellow or gold is considered the most beautiful color. By combining them in my garment, I felt is a clear expression and representation of the deep Chinese culture presented in Chinatown.

From the Urban Adaptation Theme we had to see Shelter in relation to existing infrastructure, architectural camouflage and architecture from modern and traditional Chinese. For me, the buildings in this neighborhood were similar as in to the the rest of New York City. So I represented it with a combination of  geometrical figures, emphasizing it in the straight lines, that for me equals to architecture in general.

Additionally, the firefighters soul is well connected with “wet & dry”, the concept I had for the alphabet assignment. Their main goal is to turn off burning fire, i.e. turn dry things into wet, which I tried to represent with the contrast between the dull black (being dry) and the shiny red (that gives the impression of being wet).
