I chose eight items from my studio project and calculated the water consumption amounts associated with each:
The items ranked in order of least water consumption to most water consumption is:
- Double sink: 4.4 gallons/minute
- Barn door – 16.2 gallons
- Bathtub: 17.2 gallons/shower (110 gallons/bath)
- Desk: 45 gallons
- Wood flooring: 81 gallons
- Bookcase: 200 gallons
- Toilet: 2,336 gallons/year
- Queen size bed with two pillows: 3,795 gallons
*However, this ranking is not completely accurate since all the plumbing is measured per use (and the bathtub can be used for showering and bathing – which require different amounts each). These are rough approximations of water consumption for each item.
