- Jean Patou was a pioneer in the fashion world when it came to sportswear. As a former athlete, he knew that when creating his ensembles cut and comfort were important. Through observations of watching the female body in motion, he was able to achieve that. Patou developed a fabric for swimwear that resisted shrinkage and was non-colorfast and also invented the knitted swimsuit and tennis skirt. He was known for incorporating geometrical designs such as zig zags and stripes that worked well with a more narrow silhouette. Jean Patou added his monogram to many of his simple pieces making them more identifiable as designer sportswear. His monogram consisted of a diamond shape with detailed embroidery in the center.
