EXTRA Coney Island Portraits

Coney Island Extras

smiles

I liked the color as well as the lines in this image.

Blurred

I felt this had a neat narrative that was associated with the focus drawing your attention to the boy in focus and leaving you to question the boy blurred.

Two Boys On Pier

Focus

This image leads to good narrative due to focus and there is a lot to try and understand.

Winded

The colors compliment.

Coney Island Stangers

All Natural At Coney Island

Lunch Break

These two women were local to the area and actually meet for lunch quite often while they get a lunch break there kids can go play games, ride rides, and have fun, on the pier.

The Waiting Game

This man was comfortable carrying on a conversation about his worldwide travels and living experience. He enjoyed talking about his passion for fishing too while going about his daily activities.

End Of Torment

These two boys were actually there to cheer up a bit since one had been down lately so this was his happy place they felt very comfortable in. They felt comfortable after a deep talk relaxing leaning on the rails of the pier.

Nature Versus Mechanistic World

I listened to this women as she told me her story of being an english teacher at a local high school. She relaxed and felt comfortable on her phone.

Photogenic Unstated Laughs

This sweet couple was no stranger to being photographed they were very comfortable joking around with each other having a good time.

Everyday Things

This women was just comfortable carrying about her day touring a new city.

Jokester

It was not a comfort to be in front of the camera until everyone started joking around.

There is nothing worse than being uncomfortable.  My goal with this project was to encounter people get to know them and their stories then photograph them in the most natural state. I wanted to embrace the people I met and really connect with them. Being behind a camera is not second nature for most, but it is so easy to be when you are comfortable. To make the people comfortable sometimes it meant making a joke or just talking to them and getting them to open up. This ultimately led to me getting a shot that was captured from a perspective that was unique to their story and what I learned from them that day.

The beauty to these photos is none of them were staged, and all taken from a point of view that showed each person interacting in the environment as they would with their personality and in their true skin.

Utilizing Class Skills 7/9/19

This image was taken on my 50mm 1.8 lens. I was creating a shallow depth of focus for my subject and this was an experience with a new lens for me. I personally love plants and think the narritive should be friendly and welcoming.

I took these images with the idea of narrative in mind. I utilized a shallow depth of focus. These images are uncomfortable and I wanted that to be the vibe with the cluttered mess and being focused on one particular subject different in the two photographs.

In this image I added a subject and worked on the shallow depth of field with the one in focus blurring out the other objects in the back. I also changed my lens just to try it out, I used a 24mm lens. While I was  experimenting with it I found it could also be great for long exposures with a moving subject.

For this photo I used a wide lens this was my first time shooting with one and i did lots of trial and error and found this lens worked best for the zoom pano photo and to help with ligtht I used a hood cap i feel this is a narrative from an insect such as a bee or butterfly it has a cool tone but bright vibrant colors for the subject.

In this image i used a wide angle lens with a hood cap to help with light. I also shot in the shadows to help the light be less harsh on my subject. I utilized a pano using zoom straight on. This image has cool tones and it makes it a less happy feel. It has a lot of movement which give it a mystaical vibe along with the color.

For this particular image I again tried a different lens and I used my 300mm zoom. This was a neat experiment to compare the blurred back grounds between the zoom and 50mm. I felt the zoom lens really got close to the subject and brought out great little detail and is almost like the view of what a tiny bug must see and i thought it had a neat narrative.

article response

Both these articles can speak to the artistic side of things. The first article particularly speaks to a mind set that is not only important in life but also in art.  I think the reason this article was assigned to us to read was because it talks about how we see the world in different stages of our lives. This is something that photographers should be empathetic to since a photo is a capture of a moment through our eyes or maybe in the scenario of story telling through someone else’s eyes, and we continue to share and spread that experience. Also, most of us are not from here and this is a new place. It can be overwhelming and exciting all at once. We should look at travel in a way that is good, and we need to make of our experience the best. Holding on to that one bad thing we have maybe saw or that one prejudice thought  it doesn’t allow you to truly take in the beauty of what you are seeing and will not only ruin this experience but many others. We should take a step back be like a little kid and take everything in for it’s true face value and worth.

The second article I think had a lot of value to also being present.  Sometimes we go places with our head in our phones and earbuds in, we are not present. This speaks to my generation a lot and I think it is valued we need to take it all in and see the city hear it is a part of our time here.  We are missing out by being mindless and really missing out on an opportunity to have the full experience. It is also neat and something important for us to focus on and interpret as art students.  I think this was given to us to really make us think and today in class looking at panoramic photos I almost thought it was like an image you could hear. Truthfully if you look at a photograph and make a story of it and hear an image although it doesn’t have sound.  This is something cool that art can do and to have that experience.
