Biography: My name is Alexa Murray and I am a first year Parsons student. I applied to the school as a photography major, but through my first year classes I was exposed to many different types of art and design projects, and ultimately made the decision to switch into the Communications Design major. I love brainstorming and taking on new creative challenges, and I look forward to building more technical design skills next year.
First Year Work Reflection: I think the biggest thread throughout my work this year was problem solving. I had to tackle a lot of unfamiliar assignments, and learn how to work through unforeseen challenges. I created many pieces that I am proud of, and that represent me as an artist. Many of the skills I developed first semester were able to be utilized in improving my second semester projects. One example of this is the modeling skills I developed in first semester space and materiality were applied to my final studio project second semester.
Highlights: One highlight from this year was my Studio 2 final project. The reason I consider this project a highlight of the year is because I was able to follow my own creativity and create a design project that I was satisfied with. I developed my idea over many weeks and had many prototypes. I received peer and faculty feedback, and I really was able to develop my ideas. Another project I consider a highlight of the year was my final drawing class project. I consider this project a highlight because I was able to showcase my own life story by utilizing skills we learned during the class. Rather than just a simple assignment, I was asked to apply a specific skill in a creative way. In the end I was very proud of this piece.
Conclusion: In the future I hope to be able to continue coming up with creative ideas and finding new ways to express them. I am very interested in learning more mediums, and improving my mastery of digital design platforms. I have lots of ideas for how I want things to look, and I hope to have the tools to be able to show others my ideas in a clear and efficient manner.
