• Explain exactly what you did on your Studio project since our last class.

Last class, I turned in my final project prototype (as above)

In this prototype, I created a wallpaper, which indented to show the contrast between wealthy and poverty (higher class and lower class). The “pattern” of this wallpaper is filled with the sketched of the lower class living conditions.

  • Was it successful or not? If you think it was successful, why was it? If it failed, explain why and what you are planning to do to either fix it or change it…

During this weekend, I changed the direction of my prototype again after I did more research on how could I make the pattern of the wallpaper more aesthetic comfortable (because the patterns of the first prototype are squares, which looks really bad). Therefore, I started brainstorm on my sketchbook and trying to see what should I do to make my prototype more interesting. As you can see on the right side picture. After these few weeks, all the researches lead me to focus on the contrast between wealthy and poverty. I did lots of research on Victorian Era wallpapers and toiles, and I found out the pattern of toiles are pretty similar to traditional Chinese ink painting

  • Toile
  •  Chinese Ink Painting

Therefore, I switched the culture history from Victorian Era to the Qing Dynasty in China. Before I create my final wallpaper, I had a close observation of the traditional western toiles. They are usually more than one layer. For instance, the blue toile above, there are 3 layers in the toile, buildings, plants and people. So I chose also use 3 layers for my wallpaper.  The background layer will be buildings, the second layer will be plants and detailed decorations and the top layer will be the main focus of audience, the people. There will be a contrast between wealthy class and poor class in each layers.

Layer 1: Buildings

The upper buildings are the typical house for notable families, the lower building is for people who lives in poverty.

Layer 2: Decorations and Plants

The Chinese guardian lions on the left side are one of the most famous and typical decorations of wealthy families, they usually put two stone lions in front of their door to show their power and status. The pine trees are my favorite trees, in Chinese history, pine trees are also the favorite trees of poets.

Layer 3: People and Costume

The married couple on the top are the representative of wealthy family, you can tell by the traditional costumes. The pattern are fancy and complex. On the bottom of the project, the two men represent the lower class in Qing Dynasty.

  • Write an explanation of what you will complete for next class and write how long you think it will take you to do it.
  1. In next class, I will talk to my teacher and classmates to get some critical advises and see which part should I fix.
  2. I will think about should I put plenty of same piece of pattern together to make a wallpaper or each pieces are designed differently.
  3. Contact Mood Home or Wallpaper factory, to see how long it take to print a piece of wall paper.
