#1 Observation

Here in the city, as everyone walks briskly through the streets, with their heads down or on their phones, it’s easy to shut out the world around you and focus only on getting from one place to another. Through this assignment, I found myself forced to actually look outward.

I was prompted to explore streets and areas that I would not normally walk through, in search of connecting these familiar motifs into aspects of the city’s everyday creation and destruction. I found myself inspired by the designs on the wrought-iron fences that are easily overlooked but that line every neighborhood, and the ever-present scaffolding and construction elements that define New York City’s constant state of wear and repair. I learned the importance of acknowledging the details in the setting and scenery that we travel through everyday, from the reflections in puddles in the gutter to the patterns of shadows on the ground. I also realized there are great sources of inspiration in just looking at the everyday and the mundane, and how fortunate we are to live in a city that is ever-changing.
