Integrative Studio 2: Visual Culture – Bridge 2

For the Bridge 2 assignment of Integrative Studio 2: Visual Culture we were tasked to create an innovative solution of problems that people may face everyday. In my group we took inspiration from The Road Ahead: Reimagining Mobility and focused on accessibility. We eventually decided on the idea of a shower which would have soap preloaded inside so that someone who is differently abled would be able to be cleaned fully without having to worry about lathering themselves.

I did the initial sketches which focused on different ways we would be able to implement this idea into the average bathroom.

We thought of using the layout of a tanning beds, or having an over head spray in a chamber, or a confined space with all the amenities needed (such as the lathering machine, a seat inside, and a safe walking space to eliminate slipping).

After recieving feedback we decided it would be better to narrow down our idea and design a specific tool which can be added to the shower which would be able to spray the lathering soap onto someone. Not only would this focus on one accessibility in terms of physicality, but it would also make it a more accessible price point.

Based on the second set of sketches Nicole did, we chose final design. I made a model out of foam core, and painted it a metal silver to emulate what the final could really look like.

Overall, the final outcome was still able to capture the essence of our original idea, but make the design something universal.
