I was born in Bogota and immigrated to the united states when I was 2 years old. We did not return to Colombia for 15 years until about 3 years ago. Every time since, my abuelita, Maria del Carmen Acevedo, and my tias hosted us at their family home when we visited. Staying in my father’s childhood home every time we traveled to Colombia was such an intimate experience. My Abuelita’s house became an origin point for me, it was the place I knew as home in my homeland, which I do not remember
Last spring, I visited the family house again because my abuelita moved out of it while we were in the united states, and we were unable to have closure. My mom and sister came with me and filmed as I stood outside in front of the house and cut my braid off with a pair of kitchen scissors
