This class focused on recycling, using found materials, and the earth and its natural cycles. “Sand” Art (part 2) was inspired by the process of how glass is made from sand and the attempt to reverse the process by bringing glass back to sand. This project (both Part 1 & 2) was the first time I had worked with glass. Part 2 was a happy accident, a pure exploration of material and an experiment using more found objects, made out of the crushed pieces of glass from a light bulb and the metal pieces of the same light bulb. Using a mirror as a background, I was able to juxtapose the light bulb image and the reflections of the light bulbs being used in the classroom. Though Part 1 was this project’s original plan and focus, Part 2 ended up much more intriguing. Part 2 proved that material exploration is incredibly important, that many iterations of one project can lead me in new and wonderful directions, and that playing around is much more rewarding than is expected. It also showed me that complicated and intricate projects aren’t always the answer even though that’s where my projects typically end up, and that simple projects are just as difficult and just as rewarding. I need to practice “simple.”
