For this very self-led studio class I wanted to make a project based on my interest in Window Display Design. I visited some of the most famous windows in NYC to analyze them and figure out what they’re all about as a whole. At that point I did not know how to move forward, so I played with materials and simply worked with my hands. This brought me to Chair in a Jar, which inspired the rest of the project. I do not think this project is resolved in the slightest and think it probably needs to be redone and further developed, but this project was a major process in-and-of itself and I think that was important for me to experience.
While walking down Fifth Avenue in NYC, I realized that the windows made me feel an immense desire for what was inside. The problem was that what lies beyond those windows is usually unattainable because you can’t physically touch what’s on the other side of the glass, and usually the merchandise is way out of most people’s price range. This idea of unattainable desire was translated into the jars. Each jar held an item representing something I personally have desired or do desire at any given time, but can’t actually have, whether that be a piece of chocolate when I’m trying to be healthy, or going home to San Diego when I’m in school in NYC.
