This was the first project I did in studio of spring semester sophomore year. It was inspired by a walk around the city. We were to choose any location and stroll, looking around more than usual and finding things we hadn’t noticed before. This experience was then used to inform a project of any sort. I chose to walk around Cooper Union/Astor Place. I noticed big trees, clocks, decorative lights, and many restaurants. These directed the design and I decided to try to use light as a material for the first time.
I cut the design out by hand and used light to try to shine the design on a wall, like a flashlight with a pattern. The project was simplified many times before the final outcome, and the final outcome wasn’t entirely what I expected. I learned a lot about prototyping and failure by the end. And though the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, I loved the outcome anyway. I could easily revisit this project and work towards my intended outcome, including taking advantage of the laser cutters for the design.
