10 JULY 2018

Today we had the full time to work in our groups. We stuck with Tortoise Beetle and played with ideas regarding boxes, garments, and puzzles. Eventually we came to the consensus that we wanted to make a clean scientific drawing of the beetle and add a creative spin. We kept the idea of the boxes by adding three to the drawing for depth and variety. The green and blue color palette was to represent nature and contrast the almost holographic colors of the bug. We used a paint pouring technique with black and gold acrylic on the bottom box to mimic the body of the bug as well as shiny and translucent material for the shell around the bug. The string inside the plastic bag is a metaphoric representation of the beetle.

By the close of the day our group was a little burnt out. We had this idea to frame the poster and could not seem to open our mind to other ideas. Vasi came over to view our project and advised us to slow down and not to rush our project. She said the simplicity of it was really what made it complete and that we were over thinking it. Reflecting on what she said, it was really all we needed. We were trying to hard to add a “wow” factor when really any more emphasis would take away from the entire piece. With that we were able to hang the project the next day at the beginning of class.
